Early on Saturday 2nd September, while the sun was creeping up above Baltic Wharf, preparations started for the annual See Change fundraising event; The Dragon Boat Festival.
Now in its third year, this event is an adrenaline fueled race involving corporate teams of up to 17 people who go head to head for the coveted winners trophy. Throughout the day there were several heats to whittle down to the two strongest teams who went through to the final. Each team has a drummer who sits at the head of the boat, keeping the rowers in time with the drum and motivated right to the end. From the waters edge, the many spectators could hear the shouts of ‘One! Two!’ as each drummer pushed their teams to the finish line.
Blessed with beautiful weather, the crowds soon gathered to sit along the wharf and take in the atmosphere. Along with some themed hot food traders and the opportunity to have your face painted or play a game at the coconut shy, we even had a good sing along with an all male Sea Shanty group who came to entertain us!
The competition was fierce, but of course there can only be one winner with the gold medals going to the Naughty Ninjas. Celebrations followed the medal presentations as the See Change team set about the clear up, the crowds and energetic atmosphere continuing through the afternoon until all traces of the Dragon Boats were gone.
See Change would like to thank all the teams who participated and fundraised for the event, the traders who kept us sustained, our wonderful volunteers who helped the day run smoothly and the beautiful city of Bristol for providing the stunning backdrop and gorgeous weather! We are looking forward to next year already.
